For many types of taxable income, the general rule is the receipt principle: the relevant date is not necessarily the invoice, settlement or accrual date, but when the income is considered received for tax purposes.
The recorded date can matter for assigning income to a tax year. Foreign Income FX also uses it as the reference for your selected rate method. Instead of converting an annual total at one rate, each receipt is documented separately.
The relevant receipt date may affect which tax year an amount belongs to.
The same date determines the reference period for ECB daily or BMF monthly rates in the tool.
Note: Section 11 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) includes exceptions and special rules. The applicable rule and date depend on the income type and individual circumstances. Foreign Income FX does not make this tax assessment. Section 11 EStG (official German law) ↗
You choose the rate method. The tool records the date, method, source and EUR result together.
The tool does not silently select a tax method. The appropriate method depends on the tax situation; your records show which basis you used. View methodology & sources →
Foreign Income FX does not provide tax advice or determine which method is legally required for your individual circumstances.
Date-specific reference rates with a traceable fallback to a preceding available business day.
Published historical data for 2010–2025 available offline; current data can be retrieved when needed.
Document your own rate source and rationale rather than saving a number without provenance.
Your receipt and project data are processed locally in your browser. Online rate lookups transmit only the technical rate parameters required. Read more about official sources and rate selection in our methodology guide.

✓ You have multiple receipts in USD, GBP, INR, CHF or other foreign currencies.
✓ You do not want to assemble each payment and rate source manually in Excel.
✓ You want to trace the rate and method used for every receipt later.
✓ You need a clean FX record, not an entire cloud-based tax platform.
I originally built Foreign Income FX for myself. With several sources of foreign income in different currencies, what seemed like a simple conversion quickly became repetitive work: collecting receipts, finding the relevant exchange rates, converting amounts and keeping a traceable record.
Of course, you could build your own Excel spreadsheet. I wanted a focused tool for exactly this workflow – no account, no uploading financial entries, and traceable exchange-rate sources.
That personal tool became Foreign Income FX. I turned the reusable part into a standalone product.

Free is available today. The new €14.90 Pro checkout and every Tax purchase remain inactive until payment checks and release approval are complete. One-time licenses, no subscription.
Foreign Income FX is the first building block. Future tools will each address a specific cross-border workflow rather than cramming everything into one application.
Roadmap only, not a pre-order. Features and pricing may change before release. Waitlist subscriptions use double opt-in.
Document rental receipts, running costs, local taxes, ownership shares and currencies per property – regardless of country.
Organise ITR and 143(1), TDS, Indian income and paid taxes for subsequent German tax preparation.

Rate logic and documentation can be reused, while each module stays focused and easy to understand.

What to know before downloading.
Pro + Tax is still in development. The planned price is €29.90 for each separately licensed tax year (VZ), including FX Pro. VZ 2025 and 2026 are technically envisaged but neither is cleared for purchase yet. There is no announced sale date.
No. Free/Pro document foreign-currency receipts. Pro + Tax is intended to prepare supporting annual figures for manual entry into ELSTER, WISO Steuer and other tax software, but not to file returns or replace professional tax advice.
ECB daily rates, BMF monthly rates and documented manual rates.
The date is recorded for each receipt and serves as the time reference for your chosen rate method. For many types of income, the actual receipt date also matters for the tax year. The tool does not determine which rule applies in your case.
No. You select the method for your circumstances. The tool documents the rate, method and source used.
Your receipt and project data are processed locally in your browser. Online rate lookups require a technical connection to the rate service.
No. Unzip the download and open the included index.html in your browser.
A country-independent foreign rental module is planned next. An India module for organising Indian income and tax documents is also planned. Crypto and other topics remain under consideration.
No. FX Pro costs €14.90 once after checkout approval and covers all supported years. A Tax year costs €29.90 once, stays available for editing and export after purchase and does not renew automatically.
No. Both years are planned but have not yet passed the necessary product and tax review. You can only buy a year after its individual release.
Eligible Pro customers are planned to pay €15 for their first Tax year; eligible customers who purchased Pro for €19.90 are planned to pay €10. The server must verify the previous purchase before offering either price. Further years require a separate Tax year purchase.
Excel can handle conversions. Free/Pro additionally organise receipts, link documented rates and sources, export data and (in Pro) create backups and PDF reports. Tax is intended to add broker transaction matching and tax review; those features are not yet released.
The currently available editions support template CSV. Dedicated IBKR, Trading 212, tastytrade and custom-profile imports are planned for a future Pro release; withholding-tax evaluation is reserved for Tax. Never assume an arbitrary broker file is already supported.
No. Reports are intended as documented figures and evidence for manual transfer or professional review. No direct integration or official approval is claimed.
License recovery will become available through the new license service after its hosted launch checks. For existing orders contact [email protected]. Do not enter order identifiers into an unverified website form.
